"Fashion happens by degrees ..... no banner or headlines announces its arrival .... It appears by stealth, like the wisp of clouds that heralds showers .... and that is how Indian mythology and Drau'Parage by Surraj has descended " ..... I received an image through Whatsapp on my phone ... it was a girl in a blue flared out dress with a saffron yellow overcoat .... with a Lord Krishna motif on the waist .... and the above quoted text next to the girl .... that is how i first came to know of Surraj Kathuria, fashion designer, Lord Krishna devotee and by now one of those friends that texts, calls n bombards me with pics of everything and anything that catches his creative fancy .... With unerring instinct i know that he is going to be a friend for keeps .... Lucky me !!! .... First, this guy is a hidden gem waiting to shine on a bigger stage .... second, we share an obsessive love for Lord Krishna, less for reasons of religion, more because Lord Krishna is a dude and the ultimate superstar ever !!! ..... third, he is a storehouse of Indian mythological stories and my favourite topic for reading is mythology, Greek, Roman, Norse, Indian - everything really .... fourth i am a fashion nerd, as in i am passionately curious about everything to do with a garment or piece of textile ..... Rest is elementary, my dear readers :) .... When i finally met Surraj at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2013, he was just 2 years out of Design School, hasn't presented a collection yet .... because all he makes is so high in demand that the moment he finishes, it is sold just by word of mouth ... I was very curious to see his garments first hand ... and he promised me 3 pieces he had at present .... And like a complete moron i asked for them on a day where i was already working on a professional film styling assignment .... Shima was going out of town for a few days and we are having the busiest schedule ever ... so i asked if she could manage to squeeze in a few hours to shoot the garments for the blog ..... To cut a long story short, we had the most chaotic shoot ..... Surraj came with the garments( so we had to be reaaaaalll careful how we handled them, if you know what i mean heheh) .... We roped in 3 close girlfriends ( its the policy of DSB to work with non model women) .... We only had 1 hour of sunlight left (Shima always freaks out when i bully her to shoot under any light possible hahaha) ... And our gracious hosts at The Dirty Martini, the speakeasy at Olive Bar and Kitchen, The Kila, Mehrauli was gently tapping their toes till we wrapped up the shoot in record time as they had patrons waiting to access the bar !!! ... The following is the result, we promise better results next time Surraj .... in the name of your Lord Krishna :)

Jayasri - Krishna Pleading by Syamarani Dasi

Drau'Parage by Surraj

Drau'Parage the brand name is a dedication to Surraj's paternal grandmother Draupadi, who he lost in 2010 ..... The name is a merging of Draupadi and Surraj .... DRAUPA(di) + (sur)RAGE ...... also a play on Draupadi's rage .... Draupadi is an Indian Queen from the Hindu epic Mahabharata (google for the storyline) ..... who was saved from public rape by Lord Krishna's boon of a limitless saree garment ..... as she was disrobed by a sadist Prince .... her modesty was protected by a never ending garment by Lord Krishna whom she invoked during the disrobing ..... After this humiliation, Draupadi swore to keep her hair unbound till the perpetrators were punished, which led to the Mahabharata war !!

Kerala Mural Art

Kerala mural paintings are the frescos depicting mythology and legends, which are drawn on the walls of temples and churches in South India, principally in Kerala. Ancient temples, churches and palaces in Kerala, South India, display an abounding tradition of mural paintings mostly dating back between the 9th to 12th centuries CE when this form of art enjoyed Royal patronage. - Wiki

The murals of Kerala are striking in their composition of colours, beauty, clarity and symmetry ...... The walls of the temples were painted in large-scale legends of Gods and Goddesses of the Hindu pantheon in vivid colours ....... The compositions are strictly governed by factors such as proportion, pose, background etc ...... For instance the face is to be divided into three sections, the neck is to be one-fourth of the face, the length of the chest is to be equal to that of the face and so on ....... Saffron-red is the most predominant colour of the Kerala murals ....... Herbal vegetable dyes, fruit juices, minerals and chemicals extracted from the earth, stones, root, and such natural materials are used for making the paint ....... Brushes for painting on the wall are made of the blades of certain types of grass and the roots of some trees ...... Sharpened bamboo pieces are used to draw the outlines of the murals ...... The Kerala murals was not just a fanciful representation of Hindu Gods and Goddesses ....... but was drawn following the description in the “Dhyana Slokas” of the Bhagavad Gita ......... Often referred to as simply the Gita, the Bhagavad Gita is a 700-verse scripture that is part of the Hindu epic Mahabharata ........ This scripture contains a conversation between Pandava prince Arjuna and his guide Lord Krishna on a variety of theological and philosophical issues ....... The Gita Dhyanam is not a part of the main Bhagavad Gita, but it is commonly published with the Gita as a prefix ........ It contains 9 verses and these verses of the Gita Dhyanam (also called Gita Dhyana or Dhyana Slokas) offer salutations to a variety of sacred scriptures, figures, and entities, and affirms the power of divine assistance ....... It is common practice for one to recite the Dhyana Slokas of Gita before reading the chapters or reciting a chapter ...... The significance of the Dhyana Slokas is that one offers one's respects to the Gods and other divine powers who made possible the work .... The Dhyana Slokas extol the virtues of the divine ....
