"No, no ! The adventures first, explanations take such a dreadful time ! " .... When Lewis Carroll told a story to little Alice once upon a time, rowing down the river on a lazy sunny afternoon .... it resulted in a huge book of many pages ... the Adventures in Wonderland ..... that changed the world ... that changed My world !! .... Thats the thing about adventures .... it changes you .... you are never the same when you come back to where you started ! ... So was our trip to Vrindavan on Holi, with  The Filmy Owl , the alter ego of Angel Bedi, who "aims to doodle quirky smiles across the universe, all the way to infinity" with her brilliant illustrations of life in the Indian capital, Delhi :) ... We at DSB have been thinking about a roadtripping series for long ... the idea is to discover the innate Style Barometer of the hot young creatives we know locally and socially beyond their fame and celebrityhood ... to know and understand their unique worldviews that fuel such brilliant outputs in the field of fashion, art, entertainment and music .... We have been following Angel avidly on Instagram ( 9834 followers) , on Facebook ( 30362 ) as The Filmy Owl and on her personal FB page, and she is just the sort of person you would want to go on an adventure with ... Filmy is local slang for die hard movie fans whose life and vocabulary is peppered with scenes and dialogues from blockbusters and Owl is well, ... an incredibly wise bird by connotation ... Angel is as filmy in real life as her quirky sassy doodle characters .... and as wise as the Owl on the tree who "saw more" and "spoke less" delivering wit in nano bites, enough to sting but with a dash of self deprecating humour !! ... Here is our picturesque account with the very lovable Filmy Owl :)

Road Tripping

Did you know that the first recorded road trip was by Ramesses the Great, third Egyptian Pharaoh from the BC period ? .... Of course he drove a chariot, but for our road trip, we drove a car ... three mad chicks on a three hour drive to the temple city of Vrindavan ! .... The occasion was our very colourful festival of Holi ... best celebrated in the land of Braj ... in the land of love ... in the romance between a milkmaid and a divine cowherd Radha and Krishna !! ... We already told you about the origin of Holi before ... and as is the custom while celebrating the festival of colour, we girls wore white salwar suits ... with the necessary eye protection of course !! ... Personally, i feared for my platinum blonde hair, which the girls wrapped under two shower caps, one leather tights, topped off by a dupatta ... i looked like a fright, and thankfully because i was the photographer, there are no photographs of me heheh ... seriously i should be blogging about how to play Holi if you are blonde, but we will keep that for another day and continue with the trip .... Below you can see Angel and Aanchal in pristine white in a village "Tabela" (cow shed) on the outskirts of Vrindavan where we stopped for breakfast ... right at home, these chicas are :)

Vrindavan the Basil Forest

The temple city of Vrindavan is 3 hours by road from Delhi via the Yamuna Expressway .... but it is also 3 aeons away in terms of contentment, warmth, hospitality and respect !! ... Don't get us wrong, we are proud Delhiites, and we wouldn't want to live anywhere else ... But Vrindavan (so called because there used to be forests of basil here, Vrinda = Basil, Van = Forest) opened our urban eyes to the true spirit of community that we encountered at each and every street and gali .... Can you believe it, we were 3 girls all by ourselves ... and not once did we encounter anything that can mar the blithe happy spirit that enveloped every Braj reveller, be it a resident or traveller ... every action including throwing colours or smearing our faces was done with respect, they even advised me to protect my camera lenses before drenching me in colour !! ... The city elders presiding over the festivities called out to us to give their blessings ... we city girls were very suspicious at first of these giant priests (every local seems to be a priest or priest's understudy lol) ... but once we felt safe, Angel and Aanchal were unstoppable in making friends and having fun :)

Holi at Banke Bihari

If you ever have to witness Holi in India, Mathura Vrindavan is the place .... especially the Banke Bihari temple at Vrindavan !! .... Banke Bihari is the image of Lord Krishna in the Tribhanga pose ... Banke means bent at three places, head tilted to an angle, right knee bent with right foot crossing over at the ankle (Tribhanga) ... The Lord Bihari (the supreme enjoyer) is young and Lord Brahma says of Him :
"I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, round whose neck is swinging a garland of flowers beautified with the moon-locket, whose two hands are adorned with the flute and jeweled ornaments, who always revels in pastimes of love, whose graceful threefold-bending form of Shyamasundara (the beautiful Dark Blue God) is eternally manifest."
Banke Bihari is only seen in full view during the week of Holi, and is not allowed to be photographed .. He is only a child youth .... therefore no loud bells clang to disturb Him ... nor are morning prayers(aarti) held early because it is improper to wake up children early ... the whole tradition of it is so cute and playful .... Angel and Aanchal as his Gopis doing darshan kept chanting Radhe Radhe as boisterously as school kids who have found their gang leader .... Every time the curtains opened for Darshan in the inner sanctum, the devotees threw colour in the air and chanted the name of Bihariji's beloved "Radhe Radhe" !! ... Infact these two were so full of love and innocent playfulness, that one of the young priests even took us to see the place in the temple complex where they brew huge vats of flowers for the Holi colours played in the temple .... no wonder, that even with so much colour on our skin, we did not end up having rashes, because it was organic and pure !!

Did you know that "Bhang" , the official drink and Prasad of Holi .... is a preparation from the leaves, buds and flowers of the female Indian Cannabis plant ? ... That too a Pure Female Cannabis plant no less ! .... See, a male cannabis plant releases pollen to pollinate/fertilize the female plant flower, which then bears seeds, the dried form of which we call "grass" or "weed" .... Once the female plant bears seeds its less potent !! ... Therefore Cannabis growers who grow the plant commercially, remove the male plants from the vicinity, so that the Female plant doesn't get pollinated and therefore its buds are seedless (sinsemilla) ... and these "pure" Female Cannabis, without pollination, is the most potent and is used for making Marijuana, Bhang, Hash and Hashish Oil !!! .... Bhang as an intoxicant is part of our culture since Vedic times .... and the Bhang Laddoos at Banke Bihari are yummy as hell ... The ones marked with green paste are the ones who are the Rockstars :p .... Angel and Aanchal being true blue adventurers devoured as many as possible :) ... Since i was shooting, i just had a tiny bite, but trust me it kicked me in the head and how !! .... Tomorrow check out what the girls did post Bhang ... It was such a crazy afternoon roaming the galis of Vrindavan .... having impossible conversations ..... knowing one anothers mental space without the barriers of city living !!! ..... In our second and final part of this road trip !! ... Until then :) xx
