When Designer Pawan Sachdeva invited us to view his Spring Summer 2014 collection "The Urban Glam" .... we were thrilled to find his collection so very us !! .... It is trendy, summery, young, vibrant, urban with a delightful retro touch ... In fact the pleated circle skirts, tiered maxi and collared dresses inspired us to style a concept shoot with Lewis Carroll's Alice as inspiration :) ... In our eyes, Pawan's Alice is a dreamer .... She is urban, a budding fashionista, her day starts and ends with music and she is an avid reader, devouring magazines and fiction to people her imagination with grand adventures where she reigns as the impossibly enchanting heroine !! ... Even in her mundane day to day life, checking out the latest modish fashions on online stores, hunting for the perfect song list for her gym and zumba classes, meeting up with friends for coffee, lunch and movies, attending summer literary soirees as a privileged guest list member, shopping for elusive cool in curated trunk shows .... she is essentially a dreamer embellishing her life one beautiful sequin at a time ... Pawan's Alice, is in her Wonderland everywhere she goes .... even in the Discotheque :)

Alice in the Discotheque

The Inspiration : Lewis Carroll's most loved novels,  Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass , has inspired generations of readers to find their own meaning in the philosophical characters of wonderland .... What happens when people, ways, customs are different than your own life experiences ? .... It is very easy to understand people if they belong to your same set of experiences .... It would have been very easy to live life if one were given a textbook to follow or if one followed their parents instructions of how to live it ..... But life doesn't give us textbooks, neither can parents guide their children throughout, because everybody's experiences are different ... It is the sudden bursts in growing taller, or smaller, emotionally that provokes us to question our own identity.... and this is what Alice's adventures have taught us .... That we all have our Wonderland .... a place where we cannot navigate by our rules of reality .... where we have to understand the other perspective, the other characters and play the game of Life where there are no set rules !

The Concept : We shot  five outfits from Pawan Sachdeva's Spring Summer collection at the Club BW at The Suryaa, New Friends colony .... All the five outfits are placed in the context of the two story books of Alice ... Aanchal and i had great fun making our props and selecting the parts we wanted to depict .... Therefore we added the corresponding John Tenniel illustrations from the original Lewis Carroll books to our Lookbook ..... The Club BW was the perfect place to shoot our story as its decor is in Black and White ... we thank Amit Nigam, the GM of the club, and his staff for facilitating our shoot ... Alice in the Discotheque was only made possible because of the beautiful ambience of the club, which is slowly becoming the trendiest place for the fashion set to party :) ... We also thank Team Pawan Sachdeva, Ambika Kapoor and Poonam Kumar, for their enthusiastic participation in this concept shoot captured effortlessly by photographer Waseem Gashroo .... So here is Alice in the discotheque in her Urban Glam .... escaping through her mind's rabbit hole .... and pondering upon the great questions life throws at us as we grow up !!

Down the Rabbit Hole

Has it happened to you ? .... It has happened to us many times .... switching off from our surroundings and getting lost in our thoughts .... Being physically present in a place, but mentally we are a thousand miles away .... What makes us escape reality so often ? ..... Alice in a Curacao Blue pleated Ruffle skirt in a gorgeous floral print .

We are all mad here

'Cheshire Puss,' she began, rather timidly, as she did not at all know whether it would like the name: however, it only grinned a little wider. 'Come, it's pleased so far,' thought Alice, and she went on. 'Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'
'That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,' said the Cat.
'I don't much care where—' said Alice.
'Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat.
'—so long as I get SOMEWHERE,' Alice added as an explanation.
'Oh, you're sure to do that,' said the Cat, 'if you only walk long enough.'
Alice felt that this could not be denied, so she tried another question. 'What sort of people live about here?'
'In THAT direction,' the Cat said, waving its right paw round, 'lives a Hatter: and in THAT direction,' waving the other paw, 'lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad.'
'But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
'Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: 'we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.'
'How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
'You must be,' said the Cat, 'or you wouldn't have come here.'
Alice didn't think that proved it at all; however, she went on 'And how do you know that you're mad?'
'To begin with,' said the Cat, 'a dog's not mad. You grant that?'
'I suppose so,' said Alice.
'Well, then,' the Cat went on, 'you see, a dog growls when it's angry, and wags its tail when it's pleased. Now I growl when I'm pleased, and wag my tail when I'm angry. Therefore I'm mad.'

Who are you ?

'Who are YOU?' said the Caterpillar.
This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, 'I—I hardly know, sir, just at present—at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.'
'What do you mean by that?' said the Caterpillar sternly. 'Explain yourself!'
'I can't explain MYSELF, I'm afraid, sir' said Alice, 'because I'm not myself, you see.'
'I don't see,' said the Caterpillar.
'I'm afraid I can't put it more clearly,' Alice replied very politely, 'for I can't understand it myself to begin with; and being so many different sizes in a day is very confusing.'
'It isn't,' said the Caterpillar.
'Well, perhaps you haven't found it so yet,' said Alice; 'but when you have to turn into a chrysalis—you will some day, you know—and then after that into a butterfly, I should think you'll feel it a little queer, won't you?'
'Not a bit,' said the Caterpillar.
'Well, perhaps your feelings may be different,' said Alice; 'all I know is, it would feel very queer to ME.'
'You!' said the Caterpillar contemptuously. 'Who are YOU?'

From Pawn to Queen

For some minutes Alice stood without speaking, looking out in all directions over the country—and a most curious country it was. There were a number of tiny little brooks running straight across it from side to side, and the ground between was divided up into squares by a number of little green hedges, that reached from brook to brook.
'I declare it's marked out just like a large chessboard!' Alice said at last. 'There ought to be some men moving about somewhere—and so there are!' She added in a tone of delight, and her heart began to beat quick with excitement as she went on. 'It's a great huge game of chess that's being played—all over the world—if this IS the world at all, you know. Oh, what fun it is! How I WISH I was one of them! I wouldn't mind being a Pawn, if only I might join—though of course I should LIKE to be a Queen, best.'
She glanced rather shyly at the real Queen as she said this, but her companion only smiled pleasantly, and said, 'That's easily managed. You can be the White Queen's Pawn, if you like, as Lily's too young to play; and you're in the Second Square to begin with: when you get to the Eighth Square you'll be a Queen—'

Moral of the Story !

'Tut, tut, child!' said the Duchess. 'Everything's got a moral, if only you can find it.' And she squeezed herself up closer to Alice's side as she spoke.
Alice did not much like keeping so close to her: first, because the Duchess was VERY ugly; and secondly, because she was exactly the right height to rest her chin upon Alice's shoulder, and it was an uncomfortably sharp chin. However, she did not like to be rude, so she bore it as well as she could.
'The game's going on rather better now,' she said, by way of keeping up the conversation a little.
''Tis so,' said the Duchess: 'and the moral of that is—"Oh, 'tis love, 'tis love, that makes the world go round!"'
'Somebody said,' Alice whispered, 'that it's done by everybody minding their own business!'
'Ah, well! It means much the same thing,' said the Duchess, digging her sharp little chin into Alice's shoulder as she added, 'and the moral of THAT is—"Take care of the sense, and the sounds will take care of themselves."'
'How fond she is of finding morals in things!' Alice thought to herself.
'I dare say you're wondering why I don't put my arm round your waist,' the Duchess said after a pause: 'the reason is, that I'm doubtful about the temper of your flamingo. Shall I try the experiment?'
'HE might bite,' Alice cautiously replied, not feeling at all anxious to have the experiment tried.
'Very true,' said the Duchess: 'flamingoes and mustard both bite. And the moral of that is—"Birds of a feather flock together."'
'Only mustard isn't a bird,' Alice remarked.
'Right, as usual,' said the Duchess: 'what a clear way you have of putting things!'
'It's a mineral, I THINK,' said Alice.
'Of course it is,' said the Duchess, who seemed ready to agree to everything that Alice said; 'there's a large mustard-mine near here. And the moral of that is—"The more there is of mine, the less there is of yours."'
'Oh, I know!' exclaimed Alice, who had not attended to this last remark, 'it's a vegetable. It doesn't look like one, but it is.'
'I quite agree with you,' said the Duchess; 'and the moral of that is—"Be what you would seem to be"—or if you'd like it put more simply—"Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise."'
'I think I should understand that better,' Alice said very politely, 'if I had it written down: but I can't quite follow it as you say it.'
'That's nothing to what I could say if I chose,' the Duchess replied, in a pleased tone.
'Pray don't trouble yourself to say it any longer than that,' said Alice.
'Oh, don't talk about trouble!' said the Duchess. 'I make you a present of everything I've said as yet.'
