When we first saw the lookbook of Designer Pawan Sachdeva 's latest collection for summer, we were the most excited people on the planet !! .... We always wanted to do a Victoriana concept shoot, and when Pawan shared his latest design collection, "A Victorian Monologue" with us, it was as if he heard our unsaid wishes :) .... It is always super fun to collaborate with Pawan, who is an avid co conspirator to our wild imaginings of styling shoots with a strong storyline sensibility ... The last time we styled and shot for him, we put the Pawan Sachdeva girl as Alice in the Discotheque ... an Alice who is a dreamer and carries her wonderland wherever she goes, even to the disco !! .... That shoot was super fun, and we hope you take a tiny detour and read our adventures in styling Alice :) ... But today, the Pawan Sachdeva girl is in the mood for a Monologue ... She wants to tell you about her transition from a maiden to a married lady .... clothed in the elegance and refined sensibility of the Victorian period .... in a palette of beige, softness, light and luxury .... a story in two frames !

Collection Review :

For students of fashion history, or even fashion blogging nerds like us, the Victorian era from the mid 1800s to the early 1900's were a truly exciting phase ... due to 4 important sartorial reasons :

The invention of the Sewing Machine : The introduction of the lock-stitch sewing machine in mid-century simplified both home and boutique dressmaking, and enabled a fashion for lavish application of trim that would have been prohibitively time-consuming if done by hand ... Lace machines made lace at a fraction of the cost of the old ... And the crochet machine made peekaboo additional panels give a coquettish air to conventional Victorian styles ... The invention of the electric sewing machine by 1889, led to even more elaboration on dress ... Therefore the Victorian era gowns were a sweeping flamboyance of layers and trims with a confection of lace and crochet !!

Charles Worth the Father of Haute Couture : In 1857 the Englishman Charles Worth set up a Paris fashion house and made a collection of clothes that were "unsolicited" designs ... Imagine !! ... until then, fashion details and styles were ordered by the customers ... But Worth designed clothing .... not dictated by orders placed by customers .... rather offering them finished designs to choose from !! .... He created collections, as a form of art, his vision of what women should wear ... Thus influencing the fashions of the time ... Truly revolutionary !! ... He showed the clothes on live models inventing the profession of fashion models !! ... He was also the first designer to sew his name into each garment, thereby inventing the Fashion Label or Brand Logo in clothing !! .... The sleeve style trends that were set by Charles Worth are numerous and widely documented .... and there are dedicated boards on Pinterest only for sleeves, such is his fame !!... The Victorian era sleeves were an elaborate waterfall of art made of fine lace, linen, lawn, cambric or Broderie Anglaise !!

Birth of the Tuxedo : The earliest references of a evening dress coat substitute without a tail, "originates from Tuxedo Park, an upstate New York countryside enclave for Manhattan's wealthiest citizens. A son of one of the community’s founders, Griswold Lorillard, and his friends were widely reported in society columns for showing up at the club’s first Autumn Ball in October 1886 wearing "a tailless dress coat"." ... One of the true hallmarks of the Victorian gentleman maverick .... the Tuxedo .... along with a short hairstyle .... accompanied by various forms of facial hair including moustaches, sideburns, and full beards .... fully announced the arrival of men fashion as a consumerist lifestyle !!

The Fashionisation of the Indian Kamar Bandh / Cummerband : A sort of sash accessory worn by Indian men .... the ‘kamarbandh’ or 'kamarband', a word literally meaning ‘waist-band’ was worn by Indian men .... and was first adopted by British military officers in colonial India as an alternative to a waistcoat ! ....  It later spread to civilian use as a broad waist sash, usually pleated, which is often worn with single-breasted dinner jackets or tuxedos ... The cummerband was largely a summer men fashion ... and often worn with wing tip tuxedo dress shirts and bow ties !!

All the above elements come together beautifully in Pawan's Victorian collection .... Wearing any of these gowns, and modern Tuxedos, inspired by the Victorian era .... will transport you back in time and make you feel like a fashion savant !! .... A truly Regal and Royal Collection !

The Styling :

The hardest part of a concept shoot is the model's body language .... The designer garment's inspiration should manifest itself in the expressions and body posture of the fashion models ... Aanchal Sukhija and Bardeep Dhiman have done true justice to Pawan Sachdeva's concept brief :

"FASHION HAS ALWAYS BEEN A REPETITION OF IDEAS OVER THE DIFFERENT ERA'S,
BUT WHAT MAKES  IT NEW IS THE WAY" YOU" PUT IT TOGETHER."

"DON'T CHANGE TO FIT THE FASHION, CHANGE THE FASHION TO FIT YOU.” - PAWAN SACHDEVA

Although Pawan's collection is inspired by the Victorian fashion details, he is very much clear that his garments are for the contemporary woman .... A modern woman, who is well read, articulate, fashionable, exclusive and enjoys a luxury of taste and sensibilities .... No wonder, that the first celebrity to don Pawan Sachdeva's Victorian collection is actress Neha Dhupia ... who is a fun, fearless, intelligently articulate modern woman !! .... Pawan has always been a stalwart of classic Menswear fashion ... and apart from his famous tuxedos, his classic Wing Tip shirts are an absolute must of any gentleman's dress shirt collection !! ... We were indeed spoilt for choice in choosing the outfits for this post :)

The luxurious environment of Delhi's DLF Emporio Mall was the perfect location for the shoot ... and the Worship Salon & Gentlemen's Tonic at the Mall gave Aanchal the perfect Victorian coiffure .... We think, the hairstyle was the single most important accessory to truly bring alive Pawan's Victorian heroine :)
