Every Suneet Varma couture show is remembered, as vividly for its show styling as the actual collection itself ! ... Suneet's signature elements lend an idiom to his presentations, which for its consistency, hardly finds parallel in the Indian Fashion pantheon ... Take the famous metal breastplate first showcased on model Shyamolie Verma in his 1992 collection "The Greek Sculptures" ... It has been re invented again in other fashion stories and has made countless appearances on the pages of Vogue and other fash mags till date ... For students of Indian Fashion, that breast plate says "Suneet Varma" even without credit mention !! .... Or the hugely popular and staple Suneet Varma tiered long skirt !! .... It fans out in yards and yards of sensuous fabric and any supermodel worth her salt has twirled or dreamed of twirling in that iconic skirt, just once in any of his couture presentations .... If one were to walk down memory lane, every show can actually be categorized according to the "It skirt twirling" moment of each show :) .... But the most iconic of all his style elements, is undoubtedly the magnificent SV headdress !! .... Whether it is tied in silk organza turban like ... or it is a massive fountain of exotic plumes .... or a gem studded Sarpech / Indian tiara ... or most recently, birds in flight soaring dramatically from invisible hair frames ... Suneet Varma's iconic turbans and head dresses are the Soprano in his sartorial Opera !! .... When we got a chance to style one of his headdresses on Aanchal for India Bridal Fashion Week, we were ecstatic beyond jumping with joy, and this is how we styled it :)

Decoding the SV Headdress

"I want to have a long string of images held together by grace, because grace is that undefinable, non rational, non linear word that i am looking for... " - Prabuddha Dasgupta

Maybe, the ace photographer had found grace in Suneet's magnificent oeuvre of graceful regal beauties that swanned the ramps of couture in imperial dignity, in impossibly fantastic creations on their heads .... Through the looking glass of the past, the late Prabuddha gave the fashion world some of the most enduring images from Suneet's world ... A world of shadow play, black and white, mysteriously speaking a hallowed privileged language, that we can only grasp at ! .... Between then and now, the world has changed at supersonic speed within the last 20 years .... and haute couture has been invaded by a new tribe of commentators, ..... that are more self taught, raw and proletariat bourgeoisie .... than the artsy elite of the 90's .... How must it feel for a pioneer couturier to reach out to something so modern, now, irreverent and digital like a fashion blog, God only knows :p ... But the gentleman that is Suneet Varma, actually gave us carte blanche on the styling front ... intuitively trusting us to voice our own style story !

Although time and again, Suneet has reiterated his love for Western influences in his styling arsenal .... we have found a sense of narrative .... through the exquisite turbans of the Mughal court .... the Dumalla turban or Dastar Bunga of the Sikhs ... the Marathi and Mysore Pheta ... the Rajasthani Paaghdi and Saafa ... and even the illustrations of Indian king, queen and emperors in the Amar Chitra Katha comic series !! .... For us Indians, the turban has been a testament of honour, respect and loyalty throughout the ages, and we wanted to bring out the larger than life aspect of what it means to wear such lofty regal ideals .... on a head that feels natural .... about wearing a hot pant, backpack and sneakers like most urban nomads !! .... Crazy thinking, you would say :p .... But think about it ... this generation has broken norms like no other .... Who would have thought that it would be remotely ok to wear shorts and sandals to an office as its CEO ? .... Who would have thought that billionaires would be planning their trillions before their quarter birthday ? .... Who would have thought that dropping out of college to chase an unquenchable passion would not lead to an uneducated loser !! .... Today the mind is its own minion .... unfettered with the language of the norm ... so one can wear a patriarchal string of bindis more in homage to the feminine strength of Ma Durga, stylistically speaking, .... than in memory of a more traditional bride :)

Suneet showcased this turban during the Grand Finale show of Amazon India Fashion Week's Autumn Winter 2015 presentation ... Indian model, Bhavna Suri, fondly known as Bee Suri, rocked this beauty in regal style as befits a finale show .... The theme of the presentation was "Crafts of India" and it is amply showcased in this beautiful pink, silk organza and stretch velvet turban with mirror work and tassels .... Though Suneet styled it straight up on the head, we took the liberty of styling it more off centre, with the symmetry provided by the bindis instead :) ... Here is Suneet's finale look.
